How to be Consistent: Tips and Tricks from Your Favorite Content Creators

Blog post

Consistency, consistency, consistency. That elusive skill I’ve always struggled to master. Passion strikes and I dive into whatever I’m passionate about. Then life happens, inspiration dries up, fears and doubts show up, everything slows downs and stops. Sound familiar?

You work out for a couple of weeks, work gets busy, you stop. You’re taking up dance classes, your love life crumbles, you stop. You promise yourself you’ll do more reading, you get bored, you stop. In my case, you promise yourself you’ll write consistently on your blog, fear and laziness set in and you stop. A neverending cycle of giving up on yourself time and time again…

Instead of wallowing in self-pity and trying to figure it all out by myself, I’ve decided to look to those who seem to have mastered this skill and learn how they consistently show up for themselves in the most public way. If you’re an aspiring content creator or you just want to be consistent in whatever endeavor you’re interested in, this is for you.

1. Start with the why

@themattiejames – This lifestyle blogger turned her passion into an incredibly successful business. A mom of three (and a newborn!!) who educates, inspires and shows up for other creators on the daily!

“Consistency is rocket science – it’s commitment. So if you lack consistency, you lack commitment. Anytime I’ve been inconsistent with the intention to be committed, there’s usually been a lack of clarity of what I’m being committed to. Clarity (of goals) + Commitment (to work) = Consistency”

@melodrama – This vintage darling with out-of-this-world interior design skills. Ballsy, funny and kind. She consistently puts out entertaining and valuable content through her personal ups and downs. Her stories are unmissable!

“I honestly think the way I stay consistent is because of my drive to keep creating. I think the most important thing is to find what you absolutely love to blog about and being authentic, and that way it feels less like work and more like a passion.”

2. Scheduling is key

@ijeomakola – A seasoned multi-faceted creator – Youtuber, blogger, PHD, Harvard grad, wife…the list is endless. We’ve seen her grow and evolve with beauty, grace, and humor. Even after moving continents and having a baby, she keeps showing up and putting her best foot forward.

“Consistency with blogging boils down to scheduling. Have a weekly schedule for when blog & social posts will go up and a weekly schedule of when they’ll be created! If they’re on your calendar like meetings, they’re more likely to get done.”

@monroesteele – The hardest working and most consistent content creator in the game! This OG that has been blogging for years, decided to go full-time last year and took the quality of her work to crazy levels! I am amazed by how she CONSISTENTLY delivers time and time again!

“I have a schedule. I post every Monday and Friday on my blog and a video every Wednesday. I stick to my schedule always. That’s it. It’s like brushing your teeth 2 times a day. You know you have to do it so you do. People who are passionate about it usually stick to it. If not, this probably ain’t your calling, to be honest.”

@almostmakesperfect – Lifestyle, design, and mommy blogger. Crazy talented and funny as heck! She consistently delivers the most beautiful, value-packed content. I can’t tell you how many product recommendations that she’s made that I’ve bought! A true definition of an influencer.

“It can be really hard when you’re your own boss because obviously, it’s easiest to say “meh work”. I’ve always struggled with forcing myself to work harder but it’s much harder with a child! Whether it’s a sponsored gig or not, I try to schedule myself a handful of hours a week when I have childcare to make sure I work. Sometimes I’ll get distracted but if I know it’s a set time I’m more likely to get it done. And for sure the biggest inspiration to keep going is that I actually truly enjoy what I do :)”

3. Form a habit

@eightsandweights – Fitness queen, yogi, and traveler in a smiley, shiny, extremely toned package. Consistently shows up to her mat to teach, encourage and share while climbing mountains (Mount Kilimanjaro!!) and scaling glass ceilings!

“Honestly, I could write an epistle. But I believe in the end it is about forming a habit. We are what we repeatedly do, so if we want to be excellent we have to force ourselves to repeatedly do the things that create excellence. Same with exercise. It is proven to work but it requires that we build habits by forcing ourselves to repeatedly do. Every morning I wake up, it is the same story.”

4. Maybe it’s all about quality…

@thefrugality – OG blogger extraordinaire. The very definition of authenticity and relatability. This toddler mom makes creating in-depth and insightful content look easy! I have watched her evolve from a blogger to an editor-in-chief by consistently being true to herself and her audience.

“I have a schedule on google sheets – its accessible by my assistant too and we make sure we know what’s going live and when! Also, I changed my output when I had a baby. I used to blog every other day but now, with daily content on Instagram as well as a baby, something has to give. I now do one post a week and it has made everything so much more achievable and I make more enjoyable, longer-form content rather than worrying about getting a rushed post out every other day. And I’m much happier!”

@colormecourtney – She-who-needs-no-introduction. The color queen herself! Inspiring, hard-working and crazy authentic. She gives and gives and gives. If you want a lesson on consistently delivering and achieving A+ content with impact, this is your lady.

“Although being consistent with content is key, I think that’s only especially true for beginners. You need to produce consistent content when you’re building a brand but once it’s built I think quality is the way to go. For me, I used to do a stop motion a week for 2 years, but now that I’ve amassed over 100 I create them more sporadically with quality being the key factor.”

And there you have it. Not exhaustive by any means, yet so simple and powerful.

One theme that kept coming through? Passion! The honest truth is that you won’t be able to stay consistent if you’re not passionate about whatever you’re doing. Passion is what keeps you going when you’re tired, keeps your creative juices flowing when you’re not seeing results and keeps you investing time and money when friends and family think you’re crazy. Choose your passion carefully, put these tips into action and go make your dreams come through!

[…] What helped me – Building a system that supports this model is KEY. I’ve realized that without a system, there’s no way you can be consistent. What does that mean? You need to make your content creation as effort-free as possible. For me, it means shooting my content in bulk. Look I have a full-time job and toddler to look after, there’s no way I can shoot whenever I want. The effort that goes into shooting several looks in one go ensures I can plan and push out my content weeks in advance. My system is not perfect but I’m learning and evolving the process as I figure out what works for me. Check my recent blog post with actionable pointers from seasoned content creators. […]
