6 Weeks of Invisalign – The Good, the Bad and the Awesome

Blog post

If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know I began my Invisalign journey over 6 weeks ago with Dr. Saran and his wonderful team at LIC Dental Associates. If you aren’t, you can catch up on my initial consultation and installation process over here.

It’s been over 6 weeks since my first install and a lot seems to have happened. I popped in to see Dr. Saran for a checkup a few weeks ago and I’m brimming with excitement at the progress I’ve made so far.

I’ll be completely honest and state wearing Invisalign day in day out took some getting used to. I had a minor hiccup or two, but thankfully, the great team at LIC Dental Associates were on hand to reassure and guide me. Here’s how my experience has been so far:

The Good

Like I said earlier, wearing Invisaligns took some getting used to. For the first few days, I spoke with a pronounced lisp and felt like my overbite had doubled! I felt genuinely awkward. Thankfully, this passed surprisingly quickly. After the initial few days of discomfort, I began to forget I had them on! I got used to putting them in and taking them off, quickly brushing my teeth and flossing after every meal and most importantly, mentally planning my meals around them. Which has completely changed my snacking habits – for the better!

Dear reader, I’m someone you would call a snackaholic. I’ve been known to graze from morning to night…yes, a terrible habit. Knowing that I’ll have to brush and floss after every meal has forced me to eat pretty much all my meals during actual meal times. The thought of brushing my teeth and flossing after having one cookie or a tiny piece of chocolate has been enough to help me develop much-needed self-control. I would be remiss not to add – please don’t get Invisalign just to lose weight! Just know it can help you develop better eating habits.

The Bad

My Invisalign experience had been going swimmingly….up until I got sick. Yes, I got a bad case of food poisoning a month ago and it wasn’t great. Not only was I was queasy and nauseous but I had to make sure I pulled out my Invisalign trays every time I made a dash to the bathroom. After several trips to the bathroom, I gave up putting them back in all together….which isn’t advisable but I was too sick to care at the time. Thankfully, I haven’t been sick since and I’m hoping not to be sick again anytime soon!

The Awesome

I know it’s only been just over 6 weeks but I can honestly say I’m already seeing and feeling a difference. I feel like my teeth have been pushed back, I really feel it has! Which was sort of confirmed during my 6-week checkup with Dr. Saran.

Dr. Saran looking at my progress so far

My checkup consisted of a sit down with Dr. Saran, during which my teeth were scanned again and iTero provided a quantitative assessment of how much change had occurred. A 3D simulation showed where my teeth should be next to actual scans of my teeth right now. To my excitement, Dr. Saran confirmed it looked pretty good. In his words, pretty close to the simulation. This has made me uber excited for the future!

I would also like to iterate how awesome the LIC Dental Associates team are. At every visit, they have been friendly, patient and reassuring. A few days after my initial visit, one of my attachments came off. Cue panic as I wondered if I had hampered my progress and frantically called the office for advice. They had me come in the very next day and had the attachment back in place within a few minutes. Their responsiveness and support have made this a such great experience.

What’s Next?

My next appointment in 3 weeks time is when we move on to the next exciting stage of this process – reshaping and contouring of my side teeth! Check back here in a few weeks for updates on that and so much more!
